How to Protect Your Skin in Summer

Summer is finally here and I’ve never been more excited to literally do nothing. It’s glorious. But though I’ve been a total pool bum (beach bum status coming soon), as of late, living it up on my swan float with barely a care in the world, summer skincare has been something that’s really heavy on my mind.

 

Taking excellent care of your skin gets super tricky around this time. Summer is a horse of a different color when it comes to skincare, so adjusting your routine to reflect the specific issues summer poses is crucial. Now that we’re smack dab in the middle of those hot summer months, wearing SPF is more important than ever and keeping skin full of moisture (but not overly oily!) can prove to be one of the most precarious goals of all. (Yes, more precarious than transforming the local lifeguard into your June-August romance.)

 

The good news is there’s a lot you can do to take care of your skin. It all starts in the bathroom but it follows you everywhere. From the beach to the pool to your daily strut to the mailbox, covering skin, supplanting it with effective SPF sunscreen, and keeping it hydrated are some of the most vital things you can do to not only keep aging at bay but to also ensure your skin stays as healthy as possible.

Be knowledgable about your medications.

Some medicines react poorly when introduced to direct sunlight. Certain acne medications can’t be exposed to the sun (or otherwise risk breaking you out, damaging your skin, or drying it out) and many antibiotics also react negatively. Keep tabs on your medications in order to ensure nothing goes awry.

Limit hot showers.

Searing hot showers may feel relaxing AF but they’re actually doing your skin a ton of harm. Such heat so close to the skin strips it of its natural oils, which are essential to locking in moisture, keeping your skin looking fresh and hydrated, and fighting against oil-prone acne.

Check your skin regularly.

Seeing a dermatologist semi-regularly is crucial to keeping marks on your skin on the radar. You can also perform skin checks yourself, even more often, by keeping an eye on any markings: moles, birth marks, freckles, or otherwise. Have any of these marks changed recently? Take note and make sure to bring it up to your regular physician or dermatologist.

Curb your makeup obsession.

Give your face a break! Makeup and direct sunshine don’t always see eye to eye (what with chemicals mixing etc. and potentially causing allergic reactions or intensified dryness) so refrain from caking it on in the warmer months as much as possible. It’s also likely that mixing a ton of face makeup and sunscreen may not bode well, so that’s another important reason to ditch the bronzer and foundation when it’s hot out.

Rinse after the pool.

Ew — who wants chlorine sticking to their skin, anyway? Turns out chlorine is terribly drying for the skin, so washing up after being exposed to it is always a good idea.
